Citrus and Sage Editorial in CoCo Indie.

Coco Indie is one of my favourite independent magazines. The team who creates this magazine are so dedicated and, dare I say,  particular about their vision, that I have tried and failed more times than I care to admit to be featured on their pages. Their choosy approach proves to be effective as all of their issues are completely tight and cohesive. They push contributors to be the same. After being given an online editorial last summer, (http://cocoindie.com/albums/clovers-blush/) I am finally in the print magazine this summer (Yay!) It’s great to have goals and to see these goals reached, I still cannot believe my name is in Coco Indie’s Pages.

The editorial in question is also very special to me, not just because it was shot for Coco, but also because it came straight from the heart. This shoot was inspired by the Spring/Summer 2015 line of Copious Fashions’ and was shot in the most minimal way possible. The designer for Copious, Carissa, and myself were coming off of our giant weekend long shoot for Cake and Ashes, our Fall/Winter line, where we had extensive weeks of planning, an amazing team of ten people, various locations and set-ups, long hours and considerable editing. Although this shoot was a success, and we were very happy with the results, we felt that this level of production was not necessary for our Citrus and Sage season. Instead, we brought it back to basics. After finding Miss Gwendy Darling, a person who was the perfect vision of this line; kissed by summer freckles with an ethereal glow, yet with a depth to her eyes and a purpose to her movements, we were ready to take our weekend of creativity together. We shot at a remote family cottage, myself, Carissa, our model Gwen, and a couple of helpers. We casually cruised through the shoot as I simply followed Gwen while she slinked through the water and the trees, watching the light change from orange sunrise to bright noon to the low pink warmth of the late afternoon. We swam, we sang, we danced to music of the late 60’s and had iddelic summer moments of eating watermelon and watching the sunset. There was no time-crunch, no pressure, no worry of damaging the clothing as Gwen splashed, napped, laid in the flowers and in the damp sand, all in the pieces of Citrus and Sage, the marks only making the clothing more real.

I need to thank Coco for reminding me to get back to what makes me want to create images, as the results are always the best when they come from the heart.

Here are some of my favourites, as well as the magazine spread and some behind the scenes of our weekend:

Citrus & Sage at Fashion Art Toronto

Gearing up for Copious’ Spring/Summer 2015 line to hit stores we decided a launch at Fashion Art Toronto (or FAT) was a perfect introduction.

FAT has become the kind of alternative to World Mastercard Toronto Fashion Week. It is not only a week of fashion shows, but also performances, live art, pop-up shops, film viewings, food, drinks and music.

All of the work that went into the FAT production of Citrus & Sage paid off as our beautiful lemony ladies came down the runway.

The team of people who made this show happen are Desiree from Armed jewellery for lending some of her amazing pieces, Sylvie Prud’Homme, owner and stylist of The Loft Salon and Spa for her imaginative and unique hair creations, Samantha and Andrea McLeod for their sun-kissed makeup looks, Dillon Taylor for music and video, all of the models who perfectly embodied this line, especially Gwen from Peggi LePage Management for being the face of citrus and sage for the past year, and finally, the crew at FAT. I happily bounced between producer and photographer, capturing these shots over the day:

Fin de L’hiver

The beginning of winter and the end of winter look a lot alike. Desaturated tones, naked trees, sleepy flora and fauna. Quiet and still.

The difference is that the end of winter has a feeling of pure optimism. We survived another winter, we are all waking up, emerging, opening our eyes after what feels like an endless time of sleep.

For this shoot we wanted to embody this feeling. The feeling of winter ending.

EF Magazine focuses on ethical and sustainable (E&S) fashion [which is] produced, distributed, consumed and discarded in ways that are as ethical and sustainable as possible.

Shooting for EF Magazine it was important that all products come from a place of E&S. May Mustapha, of DonnaMay Styling Duo, created every piece from recycled fabrics and pieces, as well as headdresses made from natural fibres found in the great outdoors.

Zee Moda takes over

Zediwa Louro, or Zee Moda, is a stylist whom I have had the pleasure of working with on many occasions, so when she called me up to ask me to shoot her new line I was absolutely thrilled. I have always admired her style, her styling, and now, her designs.
We did a mix of lifestyle as well as look-book shots, featuring Zee herself as the face of this premiere line.

Cakes & Ashes II

The follow-up sister series to Cake and Ashes for Livid Magazine, Cakes & Ashes, features two models and a heavily stylized shoot, both indoors and outdoors. Our team worked fiercely throughout the day and I could not be prouder of the results.

Here are tear sheets from our spread, as well as unpublished images which did not make the magazine (and a couple of behind the scenes for fun.)

Cake & Ashes

I am happy to share this editorial that I did for Ellements Magazine, as well as some of my favourites which didn’t make the spread.

This editorial was inspired by the mind and cinema of Alfred Hitchcock. This is a modern spin on the fearful blonde victim of Hitchcock films, who makes her way through the story line, desperately trying to survive.

Our all-female team shot on location at an old inactive hotel restaurant set deep down a gravel road. . .

Backwoods Sunday Afternoon…

There is this country singer, whom you should all know. Her name is Adrienne Taylor. She is incredibly talented, (as well as beautiful; inside and out)  and I had the pleasure of spending a Sunday afternoon photographing her🙂

Of course, this was a team effort and lots of “thank-you’s” are in order. Adrienne herself, for being beyond willing to do anything I threw at her, as well as being calm, kind and overall so relaxed she didn’t even sweat despite the 30+ degree weather. Joshua Brown, for doing BTS video. (As an aside, I don’t believe I will ever get used to  seeing – and hearing – myself shooting.) Joshua has mastered the skill of seeing while not being seen, which is a skill we image-makers strive to practice, making his final product A-mazing! Please check it out here:

The rest of our talented team consisted of: Samantha McLeod (the ever-so-talented makeup and hairstylist), May Mustapha (on behalf of DonnaMay Stylist Duo), Copious Fashions for providing a large, and beautiful, portion of the wardrobe, and last, but never least, our location providers; Boyd HVAC Services for providing the gem of all gems – the turquoise GMC vintage truck (my dream prop), as well as Hunter and Theresa McCaig for the use of their beautiful land on Zee Dot Acres.

Here are some of my favourites from our day:

I encourage everyone to further support and follow Adrienne – find her at http://www.adriennetaylor.ca and please, buy her new single, “Backwoods Saturday Night” on iTunes.
Salut from the country, y’all. xo

Behind the Scenes: While the Fields Burn

This past winter was very challenging for all of us. It was unusually cold, unusually relentless and unusually looooooong. What a perfect excuse to stay in the studio and create, create, create!

In order to have a little fun and lighten up these winter days, myself and an amazing all-female team got together and busted out a creative editorial for Elegant Magazine.

The following are behind the scenes images from our fab day, as well as the spread itself! Enjoy🙂
