Coco Indie is one of my favourite independent magazines. The team who creates this magazine are so dedicated and, dare I say, particular about their vision, that I have tried and failed more times than I care to admit to be featured on their pages. Their choosy approach proves to be effective as all of their issues are completely tight and cohesive. They push contributors to be the same. After being given an online editorial last summer, (http://cocoindie.com/albums/clovers-blush/) I am finally in the print magazine this summer (Yay!) It’s great to have goals and to see these goals reached, I still cannot believe my name is in Coco Indie’s Pages.
The editorial in question is also very special to me, not just because it was shot for Coco, but also because it came straight from the heart. This shoot was inspired by the Spring/Summer 2015 line of Copious Fashions’ and was shot in the most minimal way possible. The designer for Copious, Carissa, and myself were coming off of our giant weekend long shoot for Cake and Ashes, our Fall/Winter line, where we had extensive weeks of planning, an amazing team of ten people, various locations and set-ups, long hours and considerable editing. Although this shoot was a success, and we were very happy with the results, we felt that this level of production was not necessary for our Citrus and Sage season. Instead, we brought it back to basics. After finding Miss Gwendy Darling, a person who was the perfect vision of this line; kissed by summer freckles with an ethereal glow, yet with a depth to her eyes and a purpose to her movements, we were ready to take our weekend of creativity together. We shot at a remote family cottage, myself, Carissa, our model Gwen, and a couple of helpers. We casually cruised through the shoot as I simply followed Gwen while she slinked through the water and the trees, watching the light change from orange sunrise to bright noon to the low pink warmth of the late afternoon. We swam, we sang, we danced to music of the late 60’s and had iddelic summer moments of eating watermelon and watching the sunset. There was no time-crunch, no pressure, no worry of damaging the clothing as Gwen splashed, napped, laid in the flowers and in the damp sand, all in the pieces of Citrus and Sage, the marks only making the clothing more real.
I need to thank Coco for reminding me to get back to what makes me want to create images, as the results are always the best when they come from the heart.
