Citrus and Sage Editorial in CoCo Indie.

Coco Indie is one of my favourite independent magazines. The team who creates this magazine are so dedicated and, dare I say,  particular about their vision, that I have tried and failed more times than I care to admit to be featured on their pages. Their choosy approach proves to be effective as all of their issues are completely tight and cohesive. They push contributors to be the same. After being given an online editorial last summer, ( I am finally in the print magazine this summer (Yay!) It’s great to have goals and to see these goals reached, I still cannot believe my name is in Coco Indie’s Pages.

The editorial in question is also very special to me, not just because it was shot for Coco, but also because it came straight from the heart. This shoot was inspired by the Spring/Summer 2015 line of Copious Fashions’ and was shot in the most minimal way possible. The designer for Copious, Carissa, and myself were coming off of our giant weekend long shoot for Cake and Ashes, our Fall/Winter line, where we had extensive weeks of planning, an amazing team of ten people, various locations and set-ups, long hours and considerable editing. Although this shoot was a success, and we were very happy with the results, we felt that this level of production was not necessary for our Citrus and Sage season. Instead, we brought it back to basics. After finding Miss Gwendy Darling, a person who was the perfect vision of this line; kissed by summer freckles with an ethereal glow, yet with a depth to her eyes and a purpose to her movements, we were ready to take our weekend of creativity together. We shot at a remote family cottage, myself, Carissa, our model Gwen, and a couple of helpers. We casually cruised through the shoot as I simply followed Gwen while she slinked through the water and the trees, watching the light change from orange sunrise to bright noon to the low pink warmth of the late afternoon. We swam, we sang, we danced to music of the late 60’s and had iddelic summer moments of eating watermelon and watching the sunset. There was no time-crunch, no pressure, no worry of damaging the clothing as Gwen splashed, napped, laid in the flowers and in the damp sand, all in the pieces of Citrus and Sage, the marks only making the clothing more real.

I need to thank Coco for reminding me to get back to what makes me want to create images, as the results are always the best when they come from the heart.

Here are some of my favourites, as well as the magazine spread and some behind the scenes of our weekend:

Citrus & Sage at Fashion Art Toronto

Gearing up for Copious’ Spring/Summer 2015 line to hit stores we decided a launch at Fashion Art Toronto (or FAT) was a perfect introduction.

FAT has become the kind of alternative to World Mastercard Toronto Fashion Week. It is not only a week of fashion shows, but also performances, live art, pop-up shops, film viewings, food, drinks and music.

All of the work that went into the FAT production of Citrus & Sage paid off as our beautiful lemony ladies came down the runway.

The team of people who made this show happen are Desiree from Armed jewellery for lending some of her amazing pieces, Sylvie Prud’Homme, owner and stylist of The Loft Salon and Spa for her imaginative and unique hair creations, Samantha and Andrea McLeod for their sun-kissed makeup looks, Dillon Taylor for music and video, all of the models who perfectly embodied this line, especially Gwen from Peggi LePage Management for being the face of citrus and sage for the past year, and finally, the crew at FAT. I happily bounced between producer and photographer, capturing these shots over the day:

Fin de L’hiver

The beginning of winter and the end of winter look a lot alike. Desaturated tones, naked trees, sleepy flora and fauna. Quiet and still.

The difference is that the end of winter has a feeling of pure optimism. We survived another winter, we are all waking up, emerging, opening our eyes after what feels like an endless time of sleep.

For this shoot we wanted to embody this feeling. The feeling of winter ending.

EF Magazine focuses on ethical and sustainable (E&S) fashion [which is] produced, distributed, consumed and discarded in ways that are as ethical and sustainable as possible.

Shooting for EF Magazine it was important that all products come from a place of E&S. May Mustapha, of DonnaMay Styling Duo, created every piece from recycled fabrics and pieces, as well as headdresses made from natural fibres found in the great outdoors.
